The free trade agreement is scheduled to undergo legal review in 2026, but the president is using the threat of tariffs on goods coming from Canada and Mexico to pressure the two countries to start early, people familiar with the matter told the newspaper.

Trump is particularly keen to change the rules for cars under the agreement, forcing automakers to move their factories back to the United States from Canada and Mexico, the sources said.
Although the new president refused to impose steep tariffs on Canada and Mexico on his first day in office, he did order officials to examine U.S. trade relations for unfair practices. According to the document, Trump is scheduled to direct his Cabinet ministers to evaluate the impact of the USMCA on American workers and companies and make recommendations on whether the United States should continue to participate in it, Bloomberg reported.
