US stocks closed lower ahead of Nvidia earnings

European major indices close lower on the day

All major US stock indices closed lower, led by the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which fell -0.51%. Nvidia's post-close earnings were released with expectations of $5.65 on revenue of $24.69 billion (give or take – I see other estimates of $5.60 on $24.60 billion). The company reported adjusted EPS of $1.09 on revenue of $7.19 billion in the same quarter last year. The stock price is up approximately 210% over the past year (compared to the same period last year).

Forward earnings per share guidance is expected to be $5.95

The final numbers show:

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average -201.97 points or -0.51% at 39,671.03
  • The Standard & Poor's Index fell 14.40 points, or -0.27%, at 5,307.02.
  • The Nasdaq index fell -31.08 points, or -0.18%, to 16,801.54 points.

The Russell 2000 small-cap index fell -16.64 points, or -0.79%, to 2,081.70.

Snowflake just reported lower-than-expected EPS due to higher revenue:

  • Earnings per share: $0.14 vs. $0.18 expected
  • Revenues: $0.83 billion versus $0.79 billion expected
  • Shares are trading up 9.15% in after-hours trading

Synopsys also stated:

  • EPS $3 versus $3.05 expected
  • Revenues were $1.45 billion versus $1.51 billion expected
  • Shares are trading down -3.91%.
